What is nickel plating

Nickel plating creates a layer of nickel on a metal part, which can improve corrosion protection, wear resistance, and surface appearance. The specific result depends on the selected process, substrate preparation, and layer thickness.

In electroless nickel plating, the coating is deposited without an external electric current and can cover complex shapes, holes, and grooves more evenly. Electrolytic nickel plating uses electric current, and layer distribution is more influenced by the part’s geometry and position.

The suitable option is selected based on the base material, function, environment, and required dimensions. Multiple types of metals can be nickel-plated, but some require special activation or an intermediate layer.

The coating increases dimensions. Threads, fits, sealing, and contact surfaces must therefore be marked on the drawing and, as needed, masked or dimensionally prepared before treatment.
